Generalities:

The abscesses consist of accumulation of pus, in this case in the liver as a consequence of intestinal infection.

Amebic liver abscess is caused by Entamoeba histolytica, an infection also known as amoebiasis or amoebic dysentery. The bacterium enterobacter cloacae can also produce a liver abscess.


Transmission

The disease is contracted by ingesting water or food contaminated with fecal matter (sometimes due to the use of human excrement as fertilizers).
