Generalities:

Peripheral neuropathy is the damage to the peripheral nerves, particularly in the extremities. It can affect a single nerve or affect several of them in different parts of the body. It presents with different symptoms depending on whether it affects sensory, motor or autonomic nerves. The main symptoms are usually:

Symptoms:

• Loss of muscle coordination
• Muscular atrophy
• Hypersensitivity to touch
• Feeling of numbness
• Intense pain: throbbing, pulsing, or a feeling of frostbite or burning

When it comes to nerves of the autonomic nervous system the symptoms can be:

• Sweating, intolerance to temperature changes
• Alterations of the digestive system, or bladder
• Changes in blood pressure, dizziness, lightheadedness.

Causes:

It can be due to multiple causes:

• Trauma: blows or cuts due to accidents, constant pressure to use crutches or other devices that press the nerves, or repetitive tasks such as writing on the computer (carpal tunnel syndrome)
• Autoimmune diseases
• Diabetes
• Toxic substances exposure
• Gluten intolerance
• Infectiones such as: HTLV1, Herpes, Cytomegalovirus, Eipstein Barr, HIV-Aids among others.
• Tumors (paraneoplastic syndrome)
• Alcoholism
• Inherited disorders: as Charcot - Marie - Tooth´s disease
• Bone marrow disorders
• Vitamin deficiencies (B1, B6 and B12)
